The Recommended Frequency
You should check your tyre pressures at least once a month and always before a long journey. Even a perfectly healthy tyre loses around 1–2 PSI of pressure per month through natural permeation. In cold weather, pressure drops further — approximately 1 PSI for every 10°F (5.5°C) drop in temperature. Yorkshire's cold winters mean Leeds drivers should be even more vigilant from October through March.
How to Check Tyre Pressure Correctly
Always check tyres when they're cold — meaning the car has been stationary for at least 3 hours or driven less than a mile. Hot tyres give falsely high readings. Use a reliable digital gauge (available for under £10) or a petrol station air pump. Compare your reading to the recommended pressure found in your vehicle handbook, driver's door jamb sticker, or fuel cap label. There are often different pressures for front and rear tyres, and for loaded vs normal conditions.
The Consequences of Getting It Wrong
Underinflation is the more dangerous condition — causing overheating, rapid sidewall wear, reduced fuel efficiency, and increased blowout risk. Overinflation reduces the tyre's contact patch, making it skittish and reducing grip. Both conditions increase stopping distances on Leeds's wet roads. A study by TyreSafe found that 57% of UK vehicles are driven on at least one underinflated tyre.
