The UK Legal Minimum Tread Depth
In the UK, the minimum legal tyre tread depth is 1.6mm across the central three-quarters of the tyre, around the entire circumference. Driving on tyres below this limit carries a fine of up to £2,500 and three penalty points per tyre — a potential 12 points and £10,000 if all four are illegal. Most tyre manufacturers and safety experts recommend replacing tyres at 3mm, as stopping distances increase dramatically below this level.
The 20p Test
The quickest way to check your tread depth is the 20p test. Insert a 20 pence coin into the main tread grooves. If the outer band of the coin is hidden, your tread is above 3mm and legal. If you can see the outer band, it's time to get your tyres inspected by a Leeds tyre specialist. Do this check at multiple points across the tyre and on both inner and outer edges.
Other Signs Your Tyres Need Replacing
Beyond tread depth, watch for: cracks or cuts in the sidewall (caused by UV damage, ageing, or pothole impact); bulges or blisters on the sidewall (indicating internal structural damage — replace immediately); vibration or pulling to one side while driving; visible damage from a nail, screw, or kerb strike. Tyres over 5 years old should be inspected annually regardless of tread depth, and those over 10 years old should always be replaced even if they look fine.
