Why Proper Tyre Disposal Matters

Tyres cannot be sent to landfill in the UK — they're banned under the Landfill Regulations 2002. Improper disposal (fly-tipping) is a criminal offence that can result in fines up to £50,000. Yet Leeds City Council removes thousands of fly-tipped tyres annually from roadsides and waste ground across West Yorkshire. As a professional tyre fitting service, Leeds Tyre Guys take full responsibility for the legal disposal of every tyre we remove.

What Happens to Your Old Tyres?

Removed tyres go to licensed tyre waste processors. From there, they're shredded and repurposed. Common uses include: crumb rubber for playground surfaces, sports pitches, and acoustic underlay; tyre-derived fuel burned in cement kilns (replacing fossil fuels); pyrolysis processing that recovers oil, carbon black, and steel; and retreading (for tyres still structurally sound) to extend their useful life.

How to Dispose of Tyres Responsibly Yourself

When we fit your new tyres, your old ones are taken away and disposed of legally — it's included in our service. If you have old tyres at home, you can take them to Leeds City Council's household waste recycling centres (HWRC) — there is typically a small charge per tyre. Never leave tyres at regular recycling banks or in your wheelie bin. Alternatively, many tyre garages will take old tyres for a small fee.
