Why Proper Tyre Storage Matters
A set of premium tyres represents a significant investment. Improper storage can cause cracking, flat-spotting, deformation, and rubber degradation — turning your investment into waste within a single season. With limited storage space in many Leeds terraced houses and apartments, practical advice on tyre storage is genuinely valuable.
Prepare Tyres Before Storage
Before storing, clean tyres thoroughly to remove road salt, grime, and brake dust — all of which continue to degrade rubber during storage. Allow to dry completely. Deflate slightly (around 10 PSI below normal operating pressure) to reduce stress on the rubber and internal structure during long-term storage. Mark tyres with their mounting position (RF, LF, RR, LR) so they can be returned to the correct position next season.
Storage Conditions: What to Avoid
The enemies of stored tyres are: ozone (generated by electric motors — store tyres away from freezers, washing machines, and generators); UV light (degrades rubber compounds — store in opaque bags or covers); extreme heat or cold fluctuations; petroleum-based products nearby; and contact with sharp objects. Ideally, store in a cool, dry, dark environment with stable temperatures — a spare room, dry basement, or insulated garage are all suitable.
Mounted vs Unmounted Tyres: Different Rules
Tyres still mounted on wheels can be stored vertically stacked horizontally (one on top of another) or hung on a tyre rack — a good investment available for around £20–£30. Tyres removed from wheels must be stored upright (standing on their tread) and should never be stacked flat, as this deforms the sidewall.
